Calorie Calculator

Why Calorie Counting Matters

Obesity Epidemic

Over 60% of domestic cats are overweight or obese, leading to diabetes, arthritis, and reduced lifespan. Knowing exact calorie needs is the first step to prevention.

Precision Feeding

Feeding guidelines on pet food are often vague. Our calculator uses veterinary formulas (RER and MER) to tailor intake to your cat’s unique profile.

Life Stage Adjustments

Kittens need more energy for growth, while seniors may require fewer calories to avoid weight gain. Our tool automatically adjusts for age.

How the Calculator Works

1

Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

We start with the formula: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75. This is the base energy needed for essential body functions.

2

Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER)

We multiply RER by a factor based on life stage and activity level. For example, an active adult cat has a factor of 1.2–1.4, while a sedentary senior might be 0.8–1.0.

3

Daily Calorie Goal

The result is your cat’s estimated daily calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight. Adjust portions accordingly and monitor weight monthly.

Feeding Tips for a Healthy Cat

  • Use a kitchen scale to measure food in grams for accuracy.
  • Divide daily calories into 2–3 meals to prevent begging.
  • Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories.
  • Consult your veterinarian before starting any weight loss plan.
  • Always provide fresh water and encourage play for exercise.
